Two glasses of wine on a Friday, a perfectly reasonable Saturday morning, and by Saturday afternoon you want everything in the house. That pattern is real, it has a mechanism, and almost none of it is about the sugar in the wine.

The sugar in the glass is the smaller problem

Worth getting out of the way first, because it’s what people ask about. A five ounce glass of dry wine carries roughly 3 to 4 grams of carbohydrate. A regular beer is somewhere around 12 or 13. Straight spirits, vodka, gin, whisky, have none at all.

Where sugar does turn up is the mixer and the cocktail.
